25k LinkedIn Followers = $0 Sales? (Here’s What ACTUALLY Works)

Discover why becoming "LinkedIn famous" doesn't actually lead to paying clients - and what you should be doing instead!

I have 25,000+ LinkedIn followers.

Last week, I posted a piece of content that LinkedIn showed to exactly 353 people.

That’s not a typo – LinkedIn literally hid my post from 98.5% of the people who specifically told the platform they want to see my content.

But here’s the kicker: I’ve generated nearly $10 million in sales through LinkedIn since 2012, and not one penny has come from publishing content in the newsfeed.

Over the past decade, our “Done For You” LinkedIn Lead Generation Agency has helped countless clients generate 5-6 deals from LinkedIn as well – and NONE of it has come from publishing content on the platform or becoming “LinkedIn famous” by building big audiences.

Yet so many LinkedIn “experts” continue to tell you that if you just publish endless amounts of content and chase “going viral” via the LinkedIn algorithm, money will magically appear.

In reality, what ACTUALLY leads to landing paying clients from LinkedIn has nothing to do with any of that.

Allow me to share an (somewhat related) example that helps drive home the fallacy that becoming “LinkedIn famous” will boost your business’ bottom line.

How Getting Featured in The New York Times Made Me Zero Dollars

Growing up as a newspaper-obsessed kid in the 1980s, I had one dream: To be featured in The New York Times.

I mean, if you and your business got featured in The New York Times, you’d have made it, right?

So when the NYT featured me in their Sunday Business section a few years ago – on the front page, talking about LinkedIn, with a circulation of over 2 million readers – I sat back and waited for the phone to ring off the hook.

Guess how much business I got from that massive feature?

Zero.

Zilch.

Nada.

Not one qualified lead.

Not one dollar.

In fact, I got exactly one inquiry from someone who wasn’t even in my target market. 😭

That’s when it hit me: Vanity metrics don’t pay your mortgage.

The $10 Million Secret LinkedIn Experts Won’t Tell You

If you search YouTube right now for LinkedIn advice, here’s what you’ll find:

  • “How to go viral on LinkedIn”

  • “LinkedIn algorithm hacks”

  • “How to 10x your reach on LinkedIn”

  • “Beat the LinkedIn algorithm with this one trick”

Algorithm, algorithm, algorithm, algorithm.

These experts are playing a game where the rules change every month, and where, even when you win, you lose.

Here’s what they’re not telling you:

Say your post does go viral and gets 6,000 comments (I’ve seen it happen) … you now have to sift through every single one to figure out who’s actually a qualified lead.

Think about it: For each comment you have to figure out: Is this person a college intern? Someone in Pakistan who isn’t your market? Do they have budget for your services? Are they even in your industry?

You’re essentially panning for gold in a river of LinkedIn likes.

The Brutal Truth About LinkedIn’s Algorithm

LinkedIn’s algorithm works like a rigged casino game.

When you publish content, LinkedIn doesn’t show it to all of your followers.

Instead, they show it to a tiny test group – maybe 1-2% of your audience.

If those people engage quickly (what LinkedIn calls “velocity”), they might show it to a few more people.

Maybe.

It’s a black box game where LinkedIn holds all the cards.

And the house always wins, because their real goal? Getting you frustrated enough to pay for ads.

Notice how LinkedIn always suggests you “boost” your post for better reach? That’s not a coincidence.

Why LinkedIn Likes Can’t Pay Your Bills

I learned this lesson the hard way, and I share it with every client who comes to us at Nemo Media Group:

  • You cannot deposit LinkedIn likes in your bank account

  • LinkedIn comments do not pay your mortgage

  • LinkedIn shares are not legal tender at the grocery store

I call these vanity metrics, and they’re the business equivalent of empty calories.

Sure, they feel good in the moment.

That dopamine hit when someone likes your post? Addictive.

But when you’re trying to build a real business, generate actual revenue, and land 5-6 figure clients?

They’re worse than useless – they’re a distraction.

Where the REAL Money is on LinkedIn

While everyone else is fighting for scraps in the newsfeed, the real LinkedIn winners are working somewhere else entirely.

Since 2012, every single dollar of the nearly $10 million in sales I’ve generated through LinkedIn has come from one place:

The LinkedIn inbox.

Not viral posts. Not trending articles. Not algorithm hacks.

ALL of my revenue has come from 1-on-1 conversations in the LinkedIn messaging system.

The Simple Math That Changes Everything

Think about this for a second:

Option A: Spend hours crafting what you hope is the perfect viral post, then hope the algorithm shows it to people, hope the right people see it, hope they comment, then chase each commenter to see if they’re qualified.

Option B: Build a list of your exact, ideal prospects and message them directly 1-on-1.

Which sounds more likely to generate actual business?

While everyone else is playing the algorithm lottery, you could be having real conversations with real prospects who have real budgets.

What This Means for Your LinkedIn Strategy

Here’s what you can stop doing right now:

❌ Publishing content every single day

❌ Commenting on 50 posts hoping to “raise your visibility”

❌ Trying to crack the algorithm code

❌ Chasing viral moments that lead nowhere

❌ Measuring success by likes and comments

That’s hours of your life back every week.

And here’s what actually works (spoiler: it’s surprisingly simple):

βœ… Create a client-attracting profile

βœ… Build lists of your ideal prospects

βœ… Reach out with valuable, relevant messages

βœ… Have real conversations with qualified leads

βœ… Book calls with people who actually need your help

No algorithm games. No content hamster wheel. No vanity metrics.

Just real business conversations with real prospects.

The follower myth is not the only belief costing people business on LinkedIn. Here are five more that quietly kill lead generation.

The Bottom Line

After 12 years and nearly $10 million in LinkedIn-generated sales, I can tell you with absolute certainty:

The money isn’t in the newsfeed. It’s in the mailbox.

Every single 5-6 figure deal our “Done For You” LinkedIn lead generation clients land comes from one-on-one messaging.

Here’s how the entire approach works:

FYI, I’ve never seen a single sale (either my own efforts or from the countless clients we’ve worked with) come from a viral post.

So, while the “experts” keep chasing the algorithm and changing their strategies every time LinkedIn tweaks the rules, you can focus on what’s worked since 2012 and will work in 2032:

Building real relationships with real prospects through real conversations.

Because at the end of the day, people don’t buy from viral posts.

They buy from people they know, like, and trust.

And you can’t build that with an algorithm hack.
