I nearly spit out my Diet Coke when a prospective client told me his “LinkedIn strategy.”
“I’m publishing newsfeed posts six days a week, writing weekly articles, doing LinkedIn Live videos, posting daily short-form videos and I even hired a virtual assistant to help me keep up with all the content creation,” he said proudly.
“That’s great,” I replied. “How many clients have you landed from all this content?”
Silence.
Then, sheepishly: “Well … none yet. But I’m building my brand!”
Here’s the thing that drives me absolutely crazy about LinkedIn advice these days:
Everyone’s telling you to become a content machine, but nobody’s telling you the truth about what ACTUALLY makes money on the platform.
The Big LinkedIn Lie Nobody Wants to Admit
After sending tens of thousands of LinkedIn messages for hundreds of clients over the past several years, I can tell you with absolute certainty:
All the money on LinkedIn is in the mailbox – NOT the newsfeed.
Let that sink in for a second.
While everyone else is killing themselves trying to “go viral” with their LinkedIn posts, the smart players are quietly closing 5-6 figure deals through simple, 1-on-1 direct messaging.
Think about it. When was the last time you bought something expensive because of a social media post you scrolled past?
Exactly.
Why Publishing Content on LinkedIn Is Like Shouting Into the Void
Now, don’t get me wrong – I’ve published a ton of content on LinkedIn. Articles, status updates, videos, you name it.
And you know what?
The results are … underwhelming.
Here’s a perfect example from my own situation – I have more than 25,000 followers on LinkedIn.
Sounds impressive, right?
But when I publish a status update, guess how many of those 25,000 people actually see it?
Maybe a few dozen.
That’s not a typo.
A few dozen out of 25,000 people who TOLD LinkedIn they want to follow me and see my content anytime I post!

The LinkedIn Algorithm (And Why It’s Stacked Against You)
Here’s how LinkedIn’s algorithm actually works:
When you publish content on LinkedIn, the platform doesn’t show it to all your followers. Not even close. Instead, LinkedIn shows your post to a tiny percentage of your network – usually less than 1%.
If those few people engage quickly (like, comment, share), LinkedIn might – might – expand your reach to show it to more people. They call this “velocity.”
But here’s the kicker: You have zero control over this process.
You’re essentially hoping LinkedIn’s algorithm picks the right people to show your content to, and then hoping those people engage with it fast enough to trigger wider distribution.
Hope is not a strategy, my friend.
The “Vanity Metrics” Trap
I see this all the time. People get obsessed with views, likes, and shares. They celebrate when a post gets 10,000 views.
But let me ask you something:
Can you deposit views in your bank account?
Can you pay your mortgage with likes or comments?
Of course not.
Yet people are spending hours every day chasing these meaningless vanity metrics instead of doing what actually generates revenue.
The Strategy That Actually Works (And It’s Stupidly Simple)
Remember what I said earlier?
On LinkedIn, the money is in the mailbox.
Here’s what that means:
Instead of broadcasting content to the masses and hoping someone notices, you go directly to your ideal prospects through LinkedIn’s messaging system.
It’s like the difference between:
- Standing on a street corner with a megaphone, or
- Walking up to someone and having a real conversation
Which one do you think is more likely to result in a sale?
Your LinkedIn “Digital Door-Knocking” Strategy
Thanks to LinkedIn’s incredible search filters, you can create lists of your ideal prospects in seconds. Think of these lists as virtual neighborhoods where every homeowner is a perfect potential client.
Then, instead of hoping they stumble across your content, you knock on their virtual door – their LinkedIn inbox.
But here’s where most people screw it up.
The Costco Syrup Method That Changed Everything
My wife came home from Costco the other day with a massive container of maple syrup. And I mean MASSIVE – this thing could last us until 2072.
“Where did that come from?” I asked.
“Oh, they were giving out free samples on pancakes,” she said. “The person working there was so nice, and it tasted good, so I felt like I had to buy it.”
Boom – Social reciprocity for the win!
That’s exactly how you should approach LinkedIn messaging.
You don’t spam people with sales pitches. You offer them a free sample of your expertise – something so valuable they feel almost obligated to learn more.
What Kind of “Free Sample” Should You Offer?
I’m not talking about a 30-second video or a generic blog post.
I’m talking about something substantial:
- A comprehensive eBook (3,500-7,500 words)
- An in-depth training video
- A custom strategy guide
Something you create once and use over and over with each new prospect.
For example, when I reach out to Franchise Consultants, I offer them a free 11,000-word eBook called “LinkedIn Lead Generation for Franchise Consultants.” It’s professionally designed, packed with case studies, scripts, and strategies specific to their industry.
The result? Response rates that would make your head spin.

But What About Content? Should You Never Publish on LinkedIn?
Look, I’m not saying you should never publish content on LinkedIn. If you’ve got time and existing content to repurpose, go for it.
Every keystroke you make on LinkedIn gets indexed in their search engine. So if you write about leadership and use those hashtags, people searching for leadership content might find you.
That’s nice to have. But it’s not essential.
Consider LinkedIn publishing the cherry on top, not the whole sundae.
If you already have blog posts, repurpose them as LinkedIn articles. If you’ve got insights to share, turn them into quick status updates. But don’t let content creation become your full-time job unless you’re getting paid for it.
This is one of several widely repeated ideas about LinkedIn that fall apart on contact with reality. We collected the six most expensive ones here.
The Bottom Line: Work Smarter, Not Harder
While everyone else is on the content hamster wheel, churning out posts that get seen by 0.3% of their network, you can be having real conversations with real prospects who have real budgets.
Which approach sounds better to you?
Remember: You can’t deposit likes in your bank account. But you can deposit checks from clients you met through strategic LinkedIn messaging!
